Bagno di Romagna - Galeata
Bagno di Romagna - Galeata (22 km)
Galeata is a small town in the Valle del Bidente rich in history and monuments.
The Palazzo del Podestà, with the civic tower and the Florentine ‘marzocco’ (heraldic lion symbol of Florence), stands on the characteristic arcades.
The repeatedly re-built Church of San Pietro in Bosco, with early Christian roots, is noteworthy. The ‘Mons. Domenico Mambrini’ civic museum has been set-up in a former convent in the nearby hamlet of Pianetto; it houses a large archaeological section with materials coming from the site of the Roman city of Mevaniola, the Villa of Theodoric, the Abbey of S. Ellero and the territory of the Bidente river. The recent layout, which meets modern exhibition requirements, is completed by laboratories for the study of archaeological and educational materials, a book-shop and a permanent conference room (which can also be used for thematic exhibitions). ‘The archaeological park’ is of great importance as it connects the archaeological and architectonic sites in the area; the Abbey of S. Ellero, the Castle and the Hamlet of Pianetto, the archaeological area of Mevaniola, the historic town centre of Galeata, the Church of S. Maria del Pantano, the rock, the civic museum, the Via dei Romei, and the site of the Villa di Theodoric.
