Madonna di Corzano, XV secolo

Madonna di Corzano, fifteenth-century fresco

A fresco depicting a Madonna with Child and St. Catherine of Alexandria is conserved on the altar of the Sanctuary of Corzano. This fresco has been attributed to an unknown artist from Romagna of the late Gothic period, who worked in the middle of the fifteenth century. Critics agree that the elegant decorations of the cloth and the hairstyle of St. Catherine recall the style characterised by the lyrical and decorative values that were adopted in Romagna thanks above all to Antonio Alberti whose presence in Umbria and the Marche is documented from 1420 to 1442. The fresco used to be conserved in the small church adjoining the Castle of Corzano; when the castle was abandoned and fell into ruins, the population continued to venerate the miraculous image. In 1735 the church became a Sanctuary and was enlarged, but it was not until the period 1835 to 1841 that the work undertaken gave the Sanctuary its present picturesque form. In that period the fresco was removed from the wall and placed in a wooden altarpiece on the main altar, while the image of St. Bartholomew that had been beside the Madonna was lost. The work was restored by Tommaso Baldini from Florence in 1923 and then more recently when the Sanctuary itself, which was unstable, was renovated. The festival of the "Madonna di Corzano" is still celebrated twice a year: the Sunday after Easter and the last Sunday of August.
