In the third chapel on the left of the Basilica di Bagno di Romagna the miraculous image of the "Blessed Virgin of the Blood" or "Madonna del Sangue" is venerated. It is a rare woodcut in colored folio (cm 53 x50, impression 37.5 x 34.5 cm), probably from the years 1470/1480, from the area of Ferrara, by an anonymous author, which represents the Virgin with the Child who hold the globo terraqueo or ekumenikòn, in which we can see a synthetic but precise image of the Ravenna basilica of S. Apollinare in Classe. It preserves most of the original colors, given as a pattern. On the 21st of January 1498, the effigy placed once in a bath house, poured blood from his left arm: the prodigy helped to stop discord and hatred that tore the community. The image was then placed in the Basilica and inserted into a sumptuous altarpiece in lime wood carved by a Florentine workshop (1695).
