Foresta della Lama

The Lama Forest

The "Foresta della Lama" (Lama Forest) lies in the heart of the National Park of the Casentino Forests, Mount Falterona and Campigna": a field situated at 699 m to which the bastion of the Tuscan-Romagna Apennines drops down from the heights of Monte Penna (1333 m asl.) creating a landscape of steep woods and ravines and rocky ridges that contrast starkly with the gentle lines of the small plain with its tranquil streams. At the centre of a beautiful and richly varied forest at the edge of this plain there is a forestry station surrounded by exotic plants of exceptional size, such as an unusual hawthorn that is roughly 300 years old.

From the hill alongside a small church it is possible to catch sight of the reservoir of Ridracoli that has integrated well into the landscape: one branch of the lake extends to lap against the forest and offers one of the most beautiful views in the Apennines. It requires a certain effort to reach this unique destination as cars and motorbikes cannot pass here, hence you can only get here by mountain bike along the forest track (20 km) that breaks off from the former SS. 71 road of the Mandrioli Pass at Cancellino and follows the old decauville railway that was used at the beginning of the last century to transport timber, or else on foot by taking the steep trail No. 227 (3.5 km) known as the Scalandrini Trail after the stream of the same name. This trail starts from the Fangacci Pass (1,234 m asl.) slightly above the Camaldoli Hermitage and skirts along the Scalandrini river which is full of waterfalls. Alternatively, there are a number of marked trails starting from Bagno di Romagna.
