Bagno di Romagna - Sarsina: 20 km

This is one of Romagna’s richest towns from the point of view of history.
It was the ancient Capital of the Umbrians before being conquered by the Romans in 266 BC and was the birthplace of the great Latin playwright Titus Maccius Plautus. The main square, located in the site of the former forum is now dedicated to Plautus, and is dominated by the magnificent Cathedral, founded in 1008. The Cathedral houses the remains of St. Vicinius, first bishop and patron saint of the city, who was believed to work miracles during his lifetime. The miracles continued after his death, and people who are sick or “possessed” still make the pilgrimage to Sarsina where the "Chain of St. Vicinius", an iron collar that belonged to the Saint, is placed upon them (http: // www .basilicadisanvicinio.it /).
The important Archaeological Museum well deserves a visit. Its exhibits are displayed in 13 rooms and are all from the surrounding area; they cover a period ranging from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages. The richest collection, however, goes back to the Roman period, dating between the third century BC and the fourth century AD. The museum also houses inscriptions, tombs and mausoleums recovered from Pian di Bezzo and excavations in the town, as well as mosaics and rich architectural decorations.
