Affresco Madonna della rosa con Bambino

Fresco of "Madonna of the Rose and Child with Saints Peter and Paul" (15th century)

This splendid fresco of Tuscan art dating from the second half of the fifteenth century is conserved in the parish church of Poggio alla Lastra and depicts the Madonna and Child with Saints Peter and Paul, to whom the church is dedicated. It was discovered by chance behind the main altar in 1910 by Don Ferdinando Giovannetti. The inscription on the pedestal reads: "Mater ave Christi Sanctissima Virgo Maria / partu et post partum sicut et ante manens / Virgo quae Christum peperisti lacte ducast / me rege me serva me tuare potens / me tibi commendo me Virgo relinquere noli / ne peream Xsto funde Maria preces". During its restoration by prof. Dante De Carolis of the Arts Council of Bologna a dedicatory inscription came to light showing the name of the work’s commissioner: [DOMIN]US. NICOLAUS DE S. SOPHIA RECTOR HUIUS E[CCLESI]E DIE XII SE[PTEMBRIS. The latest restoration performed by Isabella Cervetti in 2008 allows us to fully appreciate the quality and colours of the work.

BY CAR: From Bagno di Romagna follow the SP. 138 towards Cesena; when you have passed through the village of San Piero in Bagno you take a left turn onto the SP. 26 which takes you through the Bidente valley. Follow this road up to km 14 at a short distance from Santa Sofia where a sign indicates the turn off for Poggio alla Lastra; follow this winding road for 6 km until you reach the hamlet. If you are travelling from Forlì, take the SP. 26 from Santa Sofia and after 1 km turn right into the county road. (Total distance from Bagno di Romagna of about 24 km).
