Madonna col Bambino e Santi (1495) a S. Piero in Bagno
Madonna and Child with Saints (1495) in S. Piero in Bagno
An altarpiece depicting the "Madonna and Child with Saints" is conserved in the chapel on the right-hand side of the parish church of S. Piero in Bagno. This altarpiece is dated 1495 and signed "IULIUS", who may be identified as the Florentine artist Giuliano Amidei (who died in Lucca in 1496), who was a pupil of Neri di Bicci and worked with Piero della Francesca. The tempera on wood comes from the church of S. Michele Arcangelo of Paganico and also bears information on its commissioning: "OPERE D. FIDELIS MONACI PRIOR HUIUS ECCLESIE PINGERE FECIT". In fact, the monk don Fedele was rector of the church of Paganico from 1469 to 1499 when it was still under the Camaldoli Abbey of Bagno di Romagna. The work was heavily "touched up" in 1932 after the damage resulting from neglect following the 1918 earthquake, and has recently been restored.
This work is in the parish church of S. Piero in Bagno at 3 km from Bagno di Romagna
